OSRS Wintertodt Guide
Oct-28-2025 PSTThe Wintertodt is one of Old School RuneScape's most unique skilling bosses, offering both fast Firemaking experience and valuable rewards. In 2025, the Wintertodt received a notable update: instead of dealing direct damage to your hitpoints, it now lowers your warmth. Regardless of your Hitpoints level, you'll consume the same amount of food. However, if your warmth reaches zero, you will still die — and for Hardcore Ironmen, this death is not safe.

This guide will cover everything you need to know about defeating the Wintertodt, from requirements and strategies to loot and rewards.
What Is the Wintertodt?
The Wintertodt is essentially a Firemaking-based boss located in the northern Kourend region. The only hard requirement is 50 Firemaking, though you will also use skills such as Woodcutting, Fletching, Construction, and Herblore while inside.
Construction XP: Requires a player-owned house.
Herblore XP: Requires completion of Druidic Ritual.
Not only does the Wintertodt provide excellent Firemaking XP, but it is also the only profitable Firemaking training method in OSRS thanks to its loot system.
How to Get There
The Wintertodt Camp can be accessed in several ways:
Games Necklace teleport (fastest method) – requires you to have entered Kourend at least once.
Fairy Ring code CIS – nearby to the camp.
Arceuus Library Teleport – close to the entrance.
Minecart travel system on Zeah – now usable without any favor.
Gear and Inventory Setup
Essential Items
Axe – A steel axe is good enough at 50 Woodcutting, and has the same chopping rate as a rune axe. Use the best axe you can if below 50 Woodcutting.
Food – Any food that heals at least 4 HP will restore 35% of your warmth. Cakes are especially effective, restoring 105% warmth in total.
Rejuvenation Potions – Each dose restores 30% warmth and can be made during games. They're very convenient since they don't require banking.
Tools – Tinderbox, knife, and hammer are available for free inside the starting area. You'll need them for lighting braziers, fletching kindling, and repairing structures.
Warm Clothing
To fully reduce damage taken inside, you'll need four pieces of warm clothing.
Easy options:
Clue hunter outfit pieces (free and accessible early).
Christmas event rewards (count as warm clothing).
Pyromancer outfit (earned as rewards).
Wintertodt's Attacks
The Wintertodt has several mechanics you'll need to watch out for:
1. Cold Damage – Constant chip damage that depends on lit braziers and the boss's HP.
2. Brazier Break – The Wintertodt breaks a brazier. Step away immediately or take heavy damage, then repair it.
3. Snowfall (3x3 Attack) – Occasionally targets a 3x3 area. Step away quickly to avoid large warmth loss.
4. Brazier Extinguish – The fire goes out; relight it to reduce incoming cold damage.
5. Pyromancer Damage – The assisting NPC can be downed; heal them with Rejuvenation potions to continue.
How to Play a Game
1. Wait in the lobby of an official Wintertodt world (World 307 is the most popular).
2. Light the brazier as soon as the game begins.
3. Chop bruma roots from the trees.
Option 1: Fletch into kindling for more points.
Option 2: Feed logs directly for faster XP/hour.
4. Deposit logs/kindling into the brazier.
Watch for brazier breaks and snowfall.
Heal the Pyromancer when needed.
5. Repeat until the Wintertodt is defeated.
Make sure you reach at least 500 points to earn both loot and the XP bonus.
Advanced Strategies
Fletch near the brazier so you can repair and relight it immediately when needed.
Safe tiles exist where snowfall cannot hit you. Learning these reduces food usage.
Soloing Wintertodt – With no point cap, you can rack up more points and maximize reward rolls when soloing, although it is slower and riskier than mass worlds.
Experience Rates
Level 50 Firemaking: ~160k XP/hr
Level 99 Firemaking: ~320k XP/hr
This makes Wintertodt one of the fastest and most efficient Firemaking training methods, second only to burning high-level logs, but with the added benefit of profit.
Rewards
Rewards are stored in a reward crate system similar to Tempoross or Guardians of the Rift.
Points:
500 points = 2 reward rolls
1,000 points = 3 rolls
Every additional 500 points = +1 roll
Loot: Scales with six of your skills. Higher levels mean better rewards.
Notable Items:
Pyromancer Outfit – +2.5% Firemaking XP bonus, counts as warm clothing. (~1/150 chance per piece)
Phoenix Pet – Extremely rare.
Tome of Fire – Provides unlimited fire runes and a Fire spell boost.
Dragon Axe – Rare but valuable.
Final Thoughts
The Wintertodt is an essential minigame for anyone training Firemaking in OSRS. It combines high XP rates with profit and unique rewards, all while being accessible at just level 50 Firemaking.
Whether you're an Ironman looking for early-game supplies or a main aiming to unlock the Phoenix pet, mastering Wintertodt is well worth the effort.
