OSRS: The Telegraphing of Mechanics Needs Improvement
Jun-14-2024 PSTIs the Vorkath Fight Going to Be Left to Rot? The Telegraphing of Mechanics Needs Improvement. The Vorkath fight in Old School RS (OSRS) has the potential to be an engaging and challenging boss encounter. However, several issues severely detract from the experience, particularly the poor telegraphing of mechanics and the chaotic nature of the battle. Addressing these concerns could greatly enhance the fight's quality and enjoyment.
1, Remove the Ambient Smoke in the Arena: The smoke in the boss arena obscures critical visual cues, making it difficult to notice Zemouregal's Bone Spike attack. Players often miss this mechanic because their attention is divided between their ability bar and the fight. Removing the smoke would improve visibility and allow players to better react to incoming attacks.
2, Improve Telegraphing of Necromancy Abilities: Zemouregal's Necromancy abilities, especially the high-damage ones like Finger of Death, need clearer audio and visual cues. Late in the fight, players sometimes take massive damage unexpectedly due to poorly telegraphed mechanics. Proper signals, both visual and auditory, are essential for players to anticipate and respond to these lethal attacks. Zemouregal's ambiguous chat lines further complicate this chaotic fight and need clarification.
3, Loot Chest Management: A minor yet important issue is the handling of loot. The loot chest should be automatically deposited into the player's inventory. This would streamline the post-fight process and enhance the overall experience.
Initially, I found some enjoyment in the Vorkath fight, but after 30 more kills, the experience has become increasingly frustrating. The overwhelming damage and constant chaos force players to rely on Revolution (Revo) mode and spend excessive time spam-eating food. Activating the Ballista sometimes results in an instant kill from Vorkath, even when activated with several seconds to spare. This inconsistency suggests a need for a comprehensive overhaul of the fight mechanics.
Proposed Overhaul of the Vorkath Fight:
1, Adjust Vorkath’s Role: Instead of focusing solely on depleting Vorkath's HP, the fight should revolve around reducing Zemouregal's HP. Vorkath should have a significant HP bar similar to Seiryu, with the primary goal being to bring Zemouregal’s HP to zero. At certain HP thresholds, players should be able to stun Vorkath, causing him to attack Zemouregal and attempt to flee. This would prompt Zemouregal to lower his shield and try to recapture Vorkath, providing players with an opportunity to damage Zemouregal directly.
2, Revise Encounter Structure: Currently, the fight involves depleting Vorkath’s HP while attacking Zemouregal when possible, followed by finishing off Zemouregal after Vorkath flees. This structure feels disconnected from the osrs quest narrative, where killing Vorkath seems out of character. A more cohesive approach would involve positioning Zemouregal behind Vorkath and a group of minions. These minions would not attack unless players approach, adding strategic depth without resorting to the lazy use of a shield. When Vorkath attempts to flee, it should clear the minions, opening a window to attack Zemouregal.
3, Consistent Mechanics and Telegraphing: Drawing inspiration from well-telegraphed fights like Rasial, the Vorkath fight should incorporate clear and consistent mechanics. This includes better visual and audio cues for all significant abilities and a more intuitive interaction between Vorkath and Zemouregal.
In conclusion, the Vorkath fight needs significant adjustments to reach its potential. By removing visual clutter, improving telegraphing of mechanics, and restructuring the encounter, the fight can become a more enjoyable and coherent experience. These changes would not only make the fight more accessible to new players but also provide a more satisfying challenge for veterans. The current state of the fight, with its chaotic mechanics and frustrating inconsistencies, risks alienating players and diminishing the overall quality of OSRS boss encounters.
