OSRS Sailing Guide: How to Reach Level 50

Nov-20-2025 PST

With Jagex releasing all the Sailing information weeks before launch, we already have a pretty strong idea of how to train the skill efficiently from day one. After mapping everything out, I created a fully optimized route—from level 1 through level 50—that I’ll be personally following at launch.

OSRS Sailing Guide: How to Reach Level 50

If you're looking to hit 50 Sailing within the first few days (or even the first few hours), this is the exact route I recommend.

Before You Start Sailing

1. Make Repair Kits

Head to your Player-Owned House workshop and make a few repair kits. It takes barely two minutes and works like “boat food” to keep you afloat during Sailing activities.

2. Bring a Saw + Hammer

You’ll need these for upgrades. If you own an Ornate/Imcando saw, great—it saves inventory space. If not, a normal saw works fine.

Level 1–4: Do the Pandemonium Quest

Step 1: Complete Pandemonium

Start the quest at Port Sarim by talking to Annwill.

  Takes about 5 minutes

  Teaches you boat steering basics

Rewards 300 Sailing XP, pushing you to level 4

After finishing the quest, you’ll end up in Pandemonium.

Step 2: Sea Charting in Pandemonium

Before leaving the island, interact with the Sea Charting spot near the cave for an extra 50 XP.

Step 3: First Port Task

Grab your first port task in Pandemonium and deliver it back to Port Sarim. On the way, stop by:

4 Sea Charting locations around the Bay of Sarim

  Each gives 50 XP

Turn in your first task at Port Sarim, and you should hit level 7.

Level 7–10: Port Tasks Back to Pandemonium

Now that you have access to two-port tasks:

  1. Pick up two tasks in Port Sarim

  2. Deliver them back to Pandemonium

  3. Complete all random sea events you encounter (they give great XP)

This easily gets you to level 10 Sailing.

Level 10–12: Lumbridge Basin, Musa Point & More Charting

At level 10: Sea Charting at Lumbridge Basin. There are three interactions unlocked at this level:

  Corpse near Group Ironman island

  Spyglass near West Lumbridge Mine

Treacherous rocks south in the swamp

These give big XP for almost no time spent.

Deliver Tasks to Musa Point

Pick up two tasks from Pandemonium and deliver them to Musa Point.

Along the route, look for these Mods Skipper Sound Sea Charting spots:

  Crashed glider near Karamja

  Stone tablet near Musa Point

  Spyglass near the Shipyard

  Wreckage southwest of Tutorial Island

Once you turn in the tasks, you’ll reach level 12.

Level 12–20: Prying Times Quest + More Port Tasks

Do the Prying Times Quest. Unlocked at level 12.

Start it in Pandemonium by talking to Squawking Steve

  Takes around 5–10 minutes

  Rewards 1,000 Sailing XP

Unlocks the crowbar, essential for Sea Charting & random events

By now, after all charting + quest rewards, you should be 20–22 Sailing.

Level 20–22: Buy and Upgrade Your Small Boat

Talk to the Pandemonium Shipwright: Buy the Small Boat (10,000 GP). Then immediately customize it with these upgrades:

  Oak cargo (18 Sailing)

  Oak hull

  Iron helm (17 Sailing)

Nothing over-the-top—just reliable early-level boosts.

Level 22–31: Current Affairs Quest, Catherby Tasks & More Charting

Do Port Tasks from Pandemonium → Catherby. This gets you to level 22+ and lets you start: Current Affairs Quest. Start it by talking to Arhein at Catherby docks.

  Rewards Sailing XP

Unlocks the duck, a major Sea Charting tool

  Takes about 10–15 minutes

Continue Port Tasks to Brimhaven

On the way from Catherby to Brimhaven, complete all Sea Charting you spot:

  Remington Strait

  Crandor area

  Karamja Volcano region

From here on, you unlock the ability to carry 3 port tasks at once, making XP much smoother. Keep doing tasks until you reach level 31.

Level 31–40: Barakuru Trials & Major Boat Upgrades

At level 31, you unlock:

  Teak materials

  Barakuru Trial #1: Tempor Tantrum

Before entering the trial: Upgrade All Newly Unlocked Boat Parts. Use any shipwright for:

  Decorative hull trims

  Flags

Linen sails (made by spinning flax)

  Iron keel

Then head into Tempor Tantrum.

Why Do This?

Your first completion of each stage gives a huge XP chunk—often 3,000+ XP for mere minutes. Run Barakuru Trials until you hit level 40.

Level 40–47: Steel Upgrades, Crew Mate & More Trials

At level 40: Upgrade Boat Again

  Steel keel

  Steel helm

Pick Up Your First Crew Mate

Grab Jobless Jim in Pandemonium. He’ll help with later Sailing activities. Continue completing Barakuru Trials until level 45, then start the quest:

Quest: Double Tortugans takes around 30–60 minutes. Once finished, your XP will land around 47 Sailing.

Level 47–50+: The Midgame Opens Up

At this point, you can go in multiple directions. Boat Upgrades to Watch For:

  Steel cannon (47 Sailing)

  Mahogany hull (48 Sailing)

  Massive metal upgrades at 52, 54, 55

Big Boat unlocked at level 50 (needed for endgame Sailing content)

Training Options at This Stage

  Chill port tasks

Hundreds of undiscovered Sea Charting spots

  Large shipwrecks at 53

Adamant salvaging hook at level 59 (AFK-friendly)

Most players should reach level 50 Sailing in about 4 hours with this route.

Final Thoughts

This guide is designed to get you on the water fast, grab every early XP boost possible, and upgrade your ship efficiently without wasting time or OSRS GP.
