OSRS: How to Get the Ring of Suffering

Mar-11-2026 PST

In Old School RuneScape, few accessories are as versatile and powerful as the Old School RuneScape Ring of Suffering. Designed primarily for defensive setups, this Zenyte ring is especially popular at bosses like Zulrah, where survivability and recoil damage both matter.

How to Get the Ring of Suffering in OSRS

The Ring of Suffering is one of the four Zenyte jewelry pieces in OSRS. It offers:

+10 to all defensive stats

+4 Prayer bonus

The ability to store recoil charges

A charged variant that reflects damage automatically

Its charged version, the Ring of Suffering (i), is commonly used for high-level PvM because it reduces the need to constantly replace Rings of Recoil and helps conserve inventory space.

Step 1: Complete Monkey Madness II

Before you can even think about crafting the Ring of Suffering, you must complete the grandmaster quest:

Monkey Madness II

This quest unlocks access to demonic gorillas, which are the primary source of Zenyte shards. The quest has high combat and skill requirements, so prepare accordingly. You'll need strong combat stats and decent gear to survive both the quest and what comes after.

Step 2: Obtain a Zenyte Shard

The most important component in the Ring of Suffering is the Zenyte shard. These shards are dropped by:

Demonic Gorillas (after Monkey Madness II)

The drop rate isn't generous, so expect to spend several hours grinding if you're relying on RNG. Efficient setups with high DPS will significantly speed up your grind.

If you'd rather skip some of the farming, many players use accumulated OSRS gold to purchase a Zenyte shard directly from the Grand Exchange. Building up your cash stack through bossing, skilling, or flipping can dramatically reduce the time needed.

Step 3: Craft a Zenyte Ring

Once you have a Zenyte shard, you'll need to turn it into a Zenyte ring. Here's what you'll need:

1 Zenyte shard

1 Gold bar

A furnace

89 Crafting (or 87 with a +2 boost)

Use the Zenyte shard on a furnace with a gold bar in your inventory to create an unenchanted Zenyte ring. If you don't have 89 Crafting, you can temporarily boost using a spicy stew, but this method involves risk due to random stat boosts.

If you don't meet the Crafting requirement at all, you can pay another player to craft it for you, but always trade safely and cautiously.

Step 4: Enchant the Zenyte Ring

After crafting the Zenyte ring, the next step is enchanting it into the Ring of Suffering. You'll need:

Level 93 Magic

The spell: Enchant Level 7 Jewelry

20 Soul runes

20 Blood runes

1 Cosmic rune

Cast the enchantment spell on the Zenyte ring, and it will transform into the Ring of Suffering.

Reaching 93 Magic can take time, but many players train through bursting, bossing, or high-alchemy methods. Investing your OSRS gold into efficient Magic training methods can shorten this grind considerably.

Step 5: Charge the Ring of Suffering

The uncharged Ring of Suffering does not reflect damage. To activate its recoil effect, you must charge it with:

Rings of Recoil

Each Ring of Recoil provides 40 charges. The Ring of Suffering can hold up to 100,000 recoil charges, which is equivalent to 2,500 Rings of Recoil.

To add charges:

1.Right-click the Ring of Suffering

2.Select “Check”

3.Use Rings of Recoil on it

Once charged, it automatically reflects damage without breaking like a normal Ring of Recoil would. This makes it extremely useful for extended PvM trips.

Optional: Imbue the Ring

To maximize its effectiveness, most players imbue the ring to create the Ring of Suffering (i). Imbuing doubles the ring's defensive bonuses.

You can imbue it through:

Nightmare Zone

Soul Wars

Both methods require points earned through participation. Nightmare Zone is generally more AFK-friendly, while Soul Wars can be faster depending on your efficiency.

Best Uses for the Ring of Suffering

The Ring of Suffering excels in:

Zulrah

God Wars Dungeon tank roles

Wilderness bossing

Any situation requiring high defense and passive recoil damage

Because it stores recoil charges internally, it reduces inventory clutter and provides consistent damage reflection over long trips.

The Ring of Suffering is typically one of the more expensive Zenyte items. Whether you're farming demonic gorillas or purchasing materials outright, the investment is significant.

For players short on time, building up OSRS gold through reliable money-making methods can be the fastest route to obtaining the ring. Some players also choose to buy gold from trusted marketplaces such as the RSgoldfast store to speed up their gear progression, though every player should carefully consider game rules and account safety before making such decisions.

Ultimately, the ring pays for itself in the long run by increasing survivability, reducing supply usage, and improving boss efficiency.

Getting the Ring of Suffering in Old School RuneScape requires dedication: finishing Monkey Madness II, farming or buying a Zenyte shard, crafting the ring, enchanting it, and charging it properly. However, the payoff is massive.

With strong defensive bonuses, built-in recoil storage, and excellent synergy with high-level PvM content, it remains one of the most practical and widely used rings in the game. If you're serious about bossing—especially at Zulrah—this is an item well worth working toward.
