OSRS Deadman Mode - Step 1: Varrock Setup & Free XP Boost

Feb-11-2026 PST

Deadman Mode: Ultimate Early Game Route

Deadman Mode tournaments in Old School RuneScape are brutal, fast-paced, and unforgiving. Every decision you make in the opening minutes can snowball into a massive advantage—or a quick trip back to Lumbridge. That's why Step 1 of your Deadman Mode Annihilation route is all about efficiency: stacking free experience, unlocking powerful runes early, and banking easy points with minimal risk.

OSRS Deadman Mode - Step 1: Varrock Setup & Free XP Boost

This guide walks you through the Varrock Setup and Free XP Boosts, the optimal starting path that gives you a strong foundation while keeping you safe from early PKers. If followed correctly, you'll walk away with thousands of experience points, several key unlocks, and a solid chunk of Annihilation points before most players even finish gearing.

Step 1: Varrock Setup and Free XP Boosts

Start in Varrock

After entering Deadman Mode, your first interaction should be with Skippy. Choose Varrock as your starting location. Varrock is ideal because it offers multiple diary tasks, safe early skilling spots, and access to the museum quiz—one of the biggest free XP boosts available at the start of the tournament.

Once you arrive, head straight to Varrock East Bank.

Bank Management: What to Keep

Deposit everything except the following essential items:

Chronicle

Starter Pack

5 Tuners

These items are all you'll need for the next phase. Keeping your inventory clean minimizes risk if you're attacked and keeps your focus on fast progression rather than inventory management.

Next, make your way to the Varrock Museum and complete the Natural History Quiz. This is one of the most valuable early-game activities in Deadman Mode because it provides:

10,000 Hunter XP

10,000 Slayer XP

Approximately 260 Annihilation Points

The quiz takes only a few minutes and requires no combat or gear, making it one of the safest and most efficient point gains in the early game. These experience drops can push your Slayer and Hunter levels high enough to unlock useful content far earlier than normal.

After completing the quiz, head upstairs and speak with Historian Minas. He will reward you with two 10,000 XP lamps.

You have two options here:

Use them immediately on any skill above level 20 to accelerate early progression.

Save them for later when experience becomes harder to obtain safely.

Both approaches are viable, but many competitive players prefer saving them for mid-game power spikes.

Unlock the Deception Rune

With points now available, your next unlock should be the Deception Rune, costing 150 points.

This rune prevents failed pickpocketing attempts, which is absolutely massive for early Deadman Mode progression. Not only does it speed up Thieving training, but it also eliminates unnecessary damage and downtime—crucial when every hitpoint matters.

Fast Thieving Levels: Pickpocket a Man

With Deception active, find a Man in Varrock and pickpocket continuously for about two minutes. This quick grind will push you to approximately level 25 Thieving, earning you another 120 Annihilation Points.

This method is fast, safe, and synergizes perfectly with the Deception Rune. You'll also be setting yourself up for future diary tasks and money-making methods.

Easy Diary Tasks for Bonus Points

Now it's time to collect some extremely easy diary points:

1.Buy a newspaper from Benny in central Varrock

Diary Task

15 points

2.Open the clothing shop interface just south of Benny

Another Diary Task

15 points

These tasks take seconds to complete and are often overlooked by newer players, despite being essentially free points.

Unlock the Lightfoot Rune (Agility Rune)

The final and arguably most important unlock in Step 1 is the Lightfoot Rune, costing 250 points.

This rune provides:

Passive Agility experience throughout the tournament

Access to agility shortcuts regardless of Agility level

In Deadman Mode, mobility is survival. Being able to escape through shortcuts, reposition quickly, or chase targets without grinding Agility early is a massive competitive advantage. Unlocking Lightfoot as early as possible pays off for the rest of the tournament.

Why This Step Matters

By the end of Step 1, you've gained:

Over 30,000 total XP without combat

Multiple diary completions

Two powerful runes that boost long-term efficiency

A strong base of Annihilation points

This setup lets you transition smoothly into combat training, skilling routes, or money-making strategies without feeling underpowered.

For players who want to stay competitive without grinding endlessly, many also supplement their progress by acquiring OSRS gold early. Reliable marketplaces like the RSgoldfast store are often used by tournament players to save time and focus on strategy rather than slow gold generation.

Step 1 of the Deadman Mode Annihilation Points route is all about momentum. Varrock offers unmatched early rewards, and when combined with smart point spending, you gain advantages that last the entire tournament.

Follow this route cleanly, avoid unnecessary risks, and you'll be well ahead of the pack before the real chaos begins. From here, you're perfectly positioned to move into combat training, rune unlocks, and high-risk, high-reward Deadman gameplay.
